Roaming in Mexico: prevent charges before landing

EU roaming rules do not require carriers to include Mexico. Check your tariff before enabling data. If the country is missing or the price is unclear, block data on your usual SIM and use an eSIM: 3 GB costs €11.99 and 10 GB costs €32.99.
At Cancún airport, photo backup can start before the tariff text is read. Selecting the eSIM and blocking home data prevents that first sync from triggering an unwanted charge.
Mexico sits outside EU protection and each contract defines its zone
A Spanish line does not receive Roam Like at Home conditions in Mexico by law. A carrier may sell a North America pass, include data in a premium plan or charge per use; voice and SMS can differ.
A US-only or vaguely named America zone is not enough—Mexico must be listed. With an eSIM, disable home-line data switching and automatic downloads before the phone finds its first network.

Keep carrier roaming if it clearly includes Mexico at a price you accept. Otherwise, an eSIM shows the price and allowance before the journey. In Mexico, protect part of the allowance for roads, ferries and the journey home.
Before flying: prepare these details
- Find the destination in the current roaming list for the exact tariff.
- Check data, voice, texts, activation and the pass renewal rule.
- Disable automatic data switching and roaming data on the usual SIM.
- Confirm whether the accommodation is in Cancún, Isla Mujeres or Riviera Maya.
Before taking a long road, ferry or cenote excursion, save tickets, the address and the transfer contact. Signal can be uneven on those stretches. Do this before allowing either line to use data, so you do not pay for an unwanted connection.
Does a US roaming pass include Mexico?
Do not assume it does. Read the product's country list and the current conditions for your line.
Can I receive verification texts with the eSIM active?
A dual-line phone can keep the home SIM, but voice and SMS charges still need checking. The travel eSIM supplies data.
Is roaming free in Mexico?
Not under EU rules. Your carrier may include the country voluntarily; check its country list and limits.
Can I leave my usual SIM switched on?
Yes, but choose the eSIM for data and turn off data roaming on the other line. Check calls and SMS separately.
Will I keep my WhatsApp number?
The account can keep its registered number while the eSIM supplies data. App availability depends on the destination.
