Roaming in Morocco: prevent charges before landing
Updated on
In short
EU roaming rules do not require carriers to include Morocco. Check your tariff before enabling data. If the country is missing or the price is unclear, block data on your usual SIM and use an eSIM: 3 GB costs €8.99 and 10 GB costs €20.99.
On a ferry, a phone may see a maritime network before the port. Blocking home-line data and waiting for the eSIM's terrestrial network prevents that service being mistaken for Moroccan mobile coverage.
Being close to Spain does not make Morocco an EU roaming country
Morocco remains outside the EU/EEA regulated area even on a short flight or ferry from Spain. A carrier may include it commercially, but the contract must name Morocco; distance proves nothing.
Ferry and aircraft networks also deserve separate attention because non-terrestrial service may have another tariff. With a travel eSIM, the Spanish line can remain available for the number if automatic data switching is off and voice and SMS charges have been checked separately.

| Option | Provider | Advantage | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home roaming | Your carrier | Keeps its services | Data, voice, price and activation |
| Zas eSIM | Orange Morocco | Known volume and price before departure | Compatibility and size |
| Local SIM | Orange, Maroc Telecom or inwi | May include a local number | Registration and current offer |
Keep carrier roaming if it clearly includes Morocco at a price you accept. Otherwise, an eSIM shows the price and allowance before the journey. In Morocco, keep data for the medina and the return transfer.
Before flying: prepare these details
- Find the destination in the current roaming list for the exact tariff.
- Check data, voice, texts, activation and the pass renewal rule.
- Disable automatic data switching and roaming data on the usual SIM.
- Save the accommodation address in Arabic or French as well as its pin.
Before entering the Atlas or continuing towards the desert, download the route, booking and guide's phone number. More data cannot help on a stretch with no signal. Do this before allowing either line to use data, so you do not pay for an unwanted connection.
Does my Spanish tariff work in Morocco like it does in France?
Not under EU roaming rules. Your carrier may add Morocco voluntarily, so check the country list and contract conditions.
Is roaming risky on the ferry?
A non-terrestrial network may use another tariff. Keep home-line data blocked and verify the network name before connecting.
Is roaming free in Morocco?
Not under EU rules. Your carrier may include the country voluntarily; check its country list and limits.
Can I leave my usual SIM switched on?
Yes, but choose the eSIM for data and turn off data roaming on the other line. Check calls and SMS separately.
Will I keep my WhatsApp number?
The account can keep its registered number while the eSIM supplies data. App availability depends on the destination.
