Roaming in Türkiye: prevent charges before landing

EU roaming rules do not require carriers to include Türkiye. Check your tariff before enabling data. If the country is missing or the price is unclear, block data on your usual SIM and use an eSIM: 3 GB costs €4.99 and 10 GB costs €8.99.
The Spanish line remains available for codes while the eSIM provides data. Crossing the Bosphorus stays inside Türkiye; an international ferry can present another network and requires a fresh check.
Türkiye is not in EU roaming because part of it lies in Europe
Türkiye sits outside the EU/EEA regulated roaming area. European carriers may include it in their own zones, but data, calls and SMS can be treated differently.
Check whether a pass starts on connection, on first use or by a timed period before landing at IST or SAW. International ferries also require attention to network changes and non-terrestrial service. A travel eSIM avoids home-line data, not possible voice charges.

Keep carrier roaming if it clearly includes Türkiye at a price you accept. Otherwise, an eSIM shows the price and allowance before the journey. In Türkiye, leave room for the correct airport and the Cappadocia transfer.
Before flying: prepare these details
- Find the destination in the current roaming list for the exact tariff.
- Check data, voice, texts, activation and the pass renewal rule.
- Disable automatic data switching and roaming data on the usual SIM.
- Distinguish IST from Sabiha Gökçen before saving the transfer.
Before travelling to Cappadocia or along the coast, save the route and accommodation name. You can then continue when the signal changes on the road. Do this before allowing either line to use data, so you do not pay for an unwanted connection.
Is Türkiye covered by free EU roaming?
Not as a regulatory right. Your carrier may sell a commercial inclusion with its own price, services and duration.
Does crossing Istanbul from Europe to Asia trigger roaming?
No. Both shores are in Türkiye; the geographic continent change does not create a new mobile country.
Is roaming free in Türkiye?
Not under EU rules. Your carrier may include the country voluntarily; check its country list and limits.
Can I leave my usual SIM switched on?
Yes, but choose the eSIM for data and turn off data roaming on the other line. Check calls and SMS separately.
Will I keep my WhatsApp number?
The account can keep its registered number while the eSIM supplies data. App availability depends on the destination.
