eSIM for Shanghai: what you need when you land

You do not need a Shanghai-only tariff. The national plan works in the city and elsewhere wherever China Unicom / China Telecom / China Mobile is available. Three GB costs €5.90 for a short stay with Wi-Fi; for easier daily travel, I would choose 10 GB at €13.99.
At Pudong, the traveller shows the stored Chinese address and checks the transfer. Days later, the same eSIM helps at Hongqiao without another activation.
Shanghai preparation starts with two airports and Chinese addresses
A Shanghai eSIM is the national China plan and can continue to Beijing or another province. Identify Pudong or Hongqiao, store the hotel name in Chinese and save the correct station.
Live data supports available messaging and searches but does not replace those copies. Nor can the map app used at home be assumed to behave identically; test alternatives before departure.

Save the address, pickup point and accommodation phone before flying. During the first hour, they are more useful than buying the largest €27.99 bundle. In China, prepare the apps, tickets and Chinese addresses you will need before flying.
Before flying: prepare these details
- Download the Shanghai map and the first transfer before departure.
- Save the accommodation address and phone outside email.
- Keep the same country eSIM when continuing through Shanghai, Beijing and train journeys between provinces.
- Separate mobile signal from access to a restricted service.
Save tickets, addresses in Chinese and offline translation. Having mobile data does not ensure that every app you normally use will be available in China. Prepare it even if you only visit Shanghai; arrival leaves little room to improvise.

It is national and can work where China Unicom or China Telecom is available, subject to data, validity and setup.

Keep the accommodation name and address in Chinese characters, plus its pin and an offline screenshot.

Will it work when I leave Shanghai airport?
It can connect wherever China Unicom / China Telecom / China Mobile has signal and the setup is correct. No eSIM can guarantee one gate or building.

Before travelling, on stable Wi-Fi. Keep the email and instructions until the trip is over.
