Roaming in the United Arab Emirates: prevent charges before landing

Updated on 24 August 2026

In short

EU roaming rules do not require carriers to include the United Arab Emirates. Check your tariff before enabling data. If the country is missing or the price is unclear, block data on your usual SIM and use an eSIM: 3 GB costs €10.99 and 10 GB costs €28.99.

A delayed connection turns into a city visit. Activating the eSIM before maps and confirming the home SIM cannot consume prevents an unexpected layover pass.

The UAE is outside EU roaming even on a layover

A brief Dubai or Abu Dhabi connection has no Roam Like at Home protection. A home carrier may sell a pass that starts on the first byte and handles voice separately.

Airport Wi-Fi and stored documents may cover an airside connection; leaving the terminal or staying longer calls for a comparison with a data eSIM. Keep the home line only after blocking its data and automatic switching. Aircraft and maritime networks may carry another tariff.

Keep carrier roaming if it clearly includes the United Arab Emirates at a price you accept. Otherwise, an eSIM shows the price and allowance before the journey. In the UAE, check calling apps and save the desert route before departure.

Before flying: prepare these details

  • Find the destination in the current roaming list for the exact tariff.
  • Check data, voice, texts, activation and the pass renewal rule.
  • Disable automatic data switching and roaming data on the usual SIM.
  • Separate an airport layover from a multi-emirate holiday.

Download the route before driving into the desert or between emirates. If you need a calling app, check its availability before travelling and keep another contact method. Do this before allowing either line to use data, so you do not pay for an unwanted connection.

Do I get EU roaming during a Dubai layover?

No. A carrier may sell a UAE pass even for a few hours, so read its activation and price.

Can I keep my Spanish SIM for a code?

Yes with dual line, but block its data and check voice or SMS charges. The travel eSIM is data only.

Is roaming free in the United Arab Emirates?

Not under EU rules. Your carrier may include the country voluntarily; check its country list and limits.

Can I leave my usual SIM switched on?

Yes, but choose the eSIM for data and turn off data roaming on the other line. Check calls and SMS separately.

Will I keep my WhatsApp number?

The account can keep its registered number while the eSIM supplies data. App availability depends on the destination.
