Roaming in Egypt: prevent charges before landing

EU roaming rules do not require carriers to include Egypt. Check your tariff before enabling data. If the country is missing or the price is unclear, block data on your usual SIM and use an eSIM: 3 GB costs €9.90 and 10 GB costs €24.99.
After landing, the phone finds an Egyptian network and starts downloading mail. If home data remains active the pass may start; selecting the eSIM first keeps use inside the purchased package.
Egypt is outside EU roaming and voice may be charged separately
Roam Like at Home does not require Egypt to be included. A home carrier may offer a pass, but check whether it covers data only, how incoming calls work and exactly when it starts.
A background sync in Cairo can activate it before the alert is read. A data eSIM separates travel internet, while the home line can remain for codes only after data switching is blocked and voice and SMS prices are understood.

Keep carrier roaming if it clearly includes Egypt at a price you accept. Otherwise, an eSIM shows the price and allowance before the journey. In Egypt, save maps before a desert road or a trip into Sinai.
Before flying: prepare these details
- Find the destination in the current roaming list for the exact tariff.
- Check data, voice, texts, activation and the pass renewal rule.
- Disable automatic data switching and roaming data on the usual SIM.
- Save the hotel name in Arabic and in the booking's transliteration.
Before a desert, Sinai or remote road excursion, download the map and keep the guide's or driver's phone number outside a single app. Do this before allowing either line to use data, so you do not pay for an unwanted connection.
Is Egypt covered by European roaming?
Not under EU/EEA rules. A carrier can sell its own inclusion with separate services, limits, activation and price.
Can answering a call cost money with the eSIM active?
Yes if the call uses the home line and its voice roaming is chargeable. The travel eSIM provides data only.
Is roaming free in Egypt?
Not under EU rules. Your carrier may include the country voluntarily; check its country list and limits.
Can I leave my usual SIM switched on?
Yes, but choose the eSIM for data and turn off data roaming on the other line. Check calls and SMS separately.
Will I keep my WhatsApp number?
The account can keep its registered number while the eSIM supplies data. App availability depends on the destination.
