eSIM for Scotland
Scotland is covered by the UK plan: from 2,90 € for 7 days with 1 GB, or 4,90 € for 15 days with 3 GB if you're touring. It runs on O2, EE and 3. Worth knowing before you book: in the Highlands, on the islands and along much of the north coast road, coverage is patchy, and that happens to every operator alike.

You're driving up the A87 towards Skye. You haven't passed another car in forty minutes, the landscape is exactly the one in the photos and your phone has been showing “no service” for half an hour. If the map isn't downloaded, you're making the next decision by eye.
Scottish coverage, without the gloss
In Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness and the mid-sized towns coverage is good, with 4G and 5G. As soon as you head out onto the mountain roads, to the islands and up north, it turns intermittent: there are long stretches with no signal from any operator.
It isn't an eSIM problem. The masts are the same for a Scottish card as for any other, and in a valley with no mast there's nothing to be done.
- Download the area's map in Google Maps before leaving the last town.
- Save your accommodation bookings on your phone, not in an email that needs to load.
- If you're driving the North Coast 500, count on long stretches out of reach and let someone know your route.
- On the ferries to the islands the signal comes and goes: check the timetables before boarding.
How many GB for a road trip
A Scottish road trip uses less than you'd think, precisely because there are stretches without coverage. Navigation uses little, and the rest of the time you're looking out of the window, which is what you came for.
| Trip | Estimated usage | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| A weekend in Edinburgh | 0,3 – 0,6 GB | 7 days · 1 GB — 2,90 € |
| A week's road trip by car | 0,8 – 1,5 GB | 15 days · 3 GB — 4,90 € |
| Two weeks around the Highlands and islands | 1,5 – 3 GB | 15 days · 3 GB — 4,90 € |
| Two people sharing | 2 – 4 GB | 30 days · 5 GB — 5,90 € |
Do I need a separate eSIM for Scotland?
No. Scotland is part of the UK and comes under the same plan, just like England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Is there coverage on the Isle of Skye?
In Portree and the main villages, yes; on the inland roads and along the coast, in patches. It's the same for every British operator, so it isn't something you fix by switching cards.
Does GPS work without coverage?
Yes. Your phone's GPS doesn't need data: what needs data is loading the map. If you download it beforehand, you can keep navigating through areas with no signal.
What if I'm also going to Ireland?
The Republic of Ireland isn't covered by the UK plan. For both countries, look at the regional Europe plan.
